We’ve seen a laptop cooling stand or two in our day, so we’ll try not to belabor the point here: Hanwha — which may or may not be the same conglomerate responsible for the Shin-Gung surface-to-air missile and the Duo for Laptop — is proud to debut the evocatively named SL-888, a portable table for your notebook. Want to sit in a chair? The legs extend to about 12-inches off the ground. Want to sit on the floor? You can do that, too — the legs collapse. Want to rest it on your lap? Hope you have a big lap, but that too is an option. Featuring a mousepad, a cup holder (perfect for that Whiskey Sour), and a cooling fan for your notebook du jour, all this can be yours for ¥3,980 (roughly $44). Hit the source link to order — or get a closer look after the break.

The stranglehold E-Ink has had on the e-book market is slipping. We’ve seen the tantalizing promises of Pixel Qi, mixing a color LCD with a low-power reflective display, but in the here and now we’ve got a new LCD-based e-reader from Aluratek. Extensively dubbed the “Libre eBook Reader PRO,” the unit uses an unnamed 5-inch monochrome reflective LCD panel, with 24 hours of continuous use off a battery charge. Not as great as E-Ink, but it should be plenty for most people, and the resultant $179 price is hard to knock. The Libre is ePUB and PDF compatible, and comes with a 2GB SD card — just the right sort of barebones-yet-functional we appreciate. We’ll have to see how well that LCD performs in person before we pull the trigger, but for people looking for an alternative to the premium devices out there (or something with a faster page refresh rate), it might just fit the bill.

Linksys products, on the other hand, are not. That’s why this latest laptop mod strikes us as a little odd. When a technically-proficient gentleman named Tyler wanted to get his hands on “a working, genuine” Mac as cheaply as possible, he did what any self-respecting (and frugal) geek would do: he scrounged New Egg and eBay for MacBook parts. Why he would then turn around and cram ‘em into an old router is, quite frankly, beyond us. Had he asked, we would have suggested something a bit more classy: perhaps a flashing pyramid? Why not a Timex Sinclair ZX81? Or maybe even a toaster? That said, this achievement — while puzzling — certainly seems to have been pulled off with not a little technical skill. If you’re curious to see how it all went down (including copious step-by-step pics) hit the source link. And prepare to scratch your head in wonderment.

In case you missed it, Sony’s got a thing for 3D with big plans to push the technology into your living room next year. While the first application will be applied to the flat screen TV, Sony’s obviously thinking about other displays judging by this tiny prototype set for reveal at Tokyo’s Digital Content EXP0 2009 on Thursday. The 13 x 27-cm device packs a stereoscopic, 24-bit color image measuring just 96 × 128 pixels viewable at 360-degrees without special glasses. If the prototype ever hits the assembly line then Sony envisions its commercial use in digital signage or medical imaging — or as a 3D photo frame, television, house for your virtual pet, or visualizer to assist with web shopping in the home. We’ll be on-hand for the unveil on Thursday with live coverage and hands-on, check back then for more.
